go to About LG chem Company Data Review of Operation Annual Report Financial Summary    LG Chemical considers environmental protection as our utmost importance in order to become an enter -prise of practicing environment-focused management. Some of our environmentally-friendly activities are: a Declaration of Environmental Policy, Operation of Environmental Safety Committee, Development of environmentally-friendly products, and our ongoing Environmental Protection Campaign. Recently, the Cheongju Plant made a great success in 'Discharging ZERO Wastewater' from its factories. LG's Environmental Policy In March 1997, LG Chemical declared an Environmental Policy which to abide by will materialize our goal of environment-first management. 1. LG will create value for customers by considering environment, safety and health before all other elements. 2. Based on the administrative body's environmental safety and health related policies of each business site, LG will establish strict regulations and fully observe them to continuously enhance the environment, safety and health standards. 3. LG will evaluate and open to the public its environmental safety and hea -lth activities. 4. All employees of LG will take full responsibility of the protecting the environment in their communities and participate in environmental protec -tion activities.   Designated as an Environmentally-Friendly Company LG Chemical is doing its utmost efforts in green management through practical activities such as developing purifying technology, expanding investments in preventing pollution, and enhancing technology to achieve 'ZERO waste and wastewater'. As a result, LG Chemical's Yeocheon, Ulsan, Cheongju, Naju, Iksan and other major sites have been designated as Environmentally-Friendly Business Sites by the Ministry of Environment.   Environmental Safety Committee In June 1991, LG Chemical set spurs to its management renovation by combining customer, corporate, and environmental policy as one body. The Environmental Safety Committee is composed of individual environ -mental committees of the each plant and technology development departments. Its task is to develop new products, evaluate environmental effects and establish LG Chemical's mid to long-term environmental management strategies.   Environmental Protection Campaign LG Chemical is leading the community environmental protection activities by carrying out the 'Purify One Mountain, One River' event in seven production sites nationwide. On a regular basis, LG Chemical's scuba diving groups, at various business sites, practice waste cleaning in the Keum-Kang and other major rivers. The company also invites elementary to high school students to its factories for environmental protection education. The Yeocheon, Cheongju, Ulsan, Naju, and Iksan, plants hold community events such as the "Environmental Drawing Contest" for children.   Developing Environmentally-friendly Products With a target of "Zero pollutant factors in all processes of production, sales, distribution, and discarding of a product", LG Chemical is concentrating on systematic development of environmentally-friendly products. Some of LG Chemical's environmentally-friendly products are: 99% bio-degradable, low pollutant detergent a natural surfactant a hair spray and mousse using CFC substitutes a cosmetics line of natural materials   Cases of Environment-Focused Management The Cheongju Plant is a large facility for producing many kinds of products, such as cosmetics, household goods, flooring, and information & electronic materials but not a drop of wastewater is discharged! In 1996 LG Chemical decided to reduce the amount of wastewater at this plant and developed a wastewater vaporization process to utilize the waste heat produced during production. As a result, the 510 tons per day of wastewater in 1996 was reduced to zero by 1998, and brought about 1.8 billion won worth savings.     Improved cleaning method Improved work flow Recycling and streamlined pipeline layout   Reduced organic waste water Recycling of inorganic waste water   Burning waste gas(30tons) Volatization by incinerator heat(38tons)
